Stewarts provide a free and comprehensive legal advice service to individuals who have suffered life changing injury or illness.

As part of our commitment to those who have suffered serious injury or illness, we provide extensive pro bono (free of charge) support through The Legal Service.  We developed The Legal Service to support patients and their families at a time when independent support is most needed but often hard to find.  The Legal Service was established in 2004 and now operates in 10 NHS Trusts in England.

Patients and their families often experience legal and practical difficulties following acute hospitalisation.  Early identification and management of these issues helps to relieve their anxieties.  Many patients are admitted unexpectedly and have made little, if any, arrangements regarding their ongoing day-to-day commitments.  We assist patients and their families with a range of legal issues which arise including (but not limited to) issues relating to finances, employment, welfare benefits, housing, care, powers of attorney and deputyship. The advice is free of charge and provided regardless of whether the patient has a personal injury claim and regardless of whether we are instructed in relation to a claim.  In the event that the patient has a potential claim for compensation, we will be happy to discuss this and provide initial legal advice.  However, as part of an ethical service, we always provide the patient/family with a list of solicitors and advise them to carry out thorough research before selecting their legal representative.  We do not accept instructions to act for patients during our first contact so that they have the opportunity to consider their options and make the choice that is right for them.

Stewarts specialise in acting for those who have sustained life-changing injuries.

The David Nott Foundation was established with a simple mission: to provide the surgeons and medical professionals working in the most hostile environments with the skills and the confidence to save more lives.

There is unfortunate certainty in the enduring occurrence of conflict and natural disaster. Environmental catastrophe and civil unrest are becoming an increasingly inherent part of our global landscape. At the frontlines of these crises are the doctors and medical professionals who work tirelessly – often against the odds – to help victims and preserve life.

Yet in countries where resources are scarce, and access to equipment and training is limited, these doctors are left to face the most challenging of circumstances, ill-equipped and unsupported.

Major Trauma Signposting Service (MTSP)
Established in 2016, the Major Trauma Signposting Partnership (MTSP) is now available at eight NHS Major Trauma Centres. The free service provides bedside advice and support to major trauma patients and their families, helping them navigate the new challenges facing them after a major trauma event. For some patients, the social and financial implications of trauma can be even more distressing and challenging for them than their physical injuries. Others struggle more with long-term psychological and vocational issues.  We are there for them, at their bedside, ready to advise and support. Our professional team of hospital-based Advisers support patients with practical social and welfare advice. MTSP Advisers all have a clinical background and work alongside colleagues from the NHS, Citizens Advice and national charities such as Headway and CBIT. With the MTSP supporting patients effectively, NHS front line staff have more time to care for patients. Patients helped by the MTSP team are less anxious, more inclined to engage in their treatment and better equipped to cope post-hospital. Delivered at no cost to the NHS Trust or the patient, the MTSP really is a ‘win win’ service.
